OTTAWA — Canada’s current climate-change plans leave it 79 million tonnes shy of its greenhouse-gas emissions targets but Environment Minister Catherine McKenna says most of that gap will be closed if Canadians switch to electric cars and public transit more quickly.

But McKenna said Thursday that a number of moves haven’t been worked into the country’s models yet, such as the construction of major new transit systems and policies to cut the use of single-use plastic packaging.

Marijuana is the dried flower of the female cannabis sativa plant. At WRDSMTH’s installation, attendees witnessed a recreation of his personal workspace and were able to produce their own art on a blank canvas using his stencils. “I have a method of cutting stencils where I can reuse them again and again,” he explains. “So it’s not just cutting and throwing paper away. It’s actually a way of making them that’s durable and portable. For WRDSMTH, watching guests enjoy themselves as they engaged with his art was a true pay-it-forward moment. “I always talk about the ripple effect that happens with my work,” he says. “If people walk away with a smile, they might go up to somebody and their smile makes them smile. It’s just this ripple effect.”

Throughout the state, there are over 600 public chargers at 250 locations. Five New Jersey highways also have been federally designated as “Electric Vehicle Corridors,” where fast chargers allow for easy electric travel.

Aside from environmental motivations, Bailey said solar is clearly a good financial decision for residents. His and Chatfield’s ground-mounted PV installation was paid back with energy savings in seven years, and under the group buy and with current solar prices, the payback time would be shorter, he said.

Along with the group buy, Cheq Bay Renewables is also pushing for solar on other fronts. The group is working with three local school districts in hopes of getting funding for installations totaling 635 kW, in part through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar in Your Community Challenge for underserved communities. Prizes they’ve already gotten through that program have paid for engineering and feasibility studies for the planned projects, Bailey said, and this fall the project was awarded a Wisconsin Energy Innovation grant.
